New Delhi, India (UNA) : The Ministry of Defence has approved and signed defence contracts worth ₹4,666 crore to modernise equipment used by the Indian Army and Navy. The agreements focus on supplying new close-quarter battle carbines for soldiers and heavyweight torpedoes for naval submarines. As part of the deal, over 4.25 lakh modern carbines will be inducted for frontline troops. These lighter and more compact weapons are designed for close-range combat situations, helping soldiers respond faster during counter-terror operations and urban missions. The new rifles will gradually replace older small arms currently in service. The Navy will also receive 48 heavyweight torpedoes to strengthen the underwater combat capability of its submarines. These torpedoes will be deployed on Kalvari-class submarines, enhancing their ability to detect and counter threats beneath the sea. Deliveries are planned in phases over the coming years. For common citizens, the move means stronger national security and better protection of borders and maritime zones. The contracts also support domestic defence manufacturing, generating skilled employment and encouraging self-reliance in critical military equipment. Officials have stated that these procurements are part of a long-term plan to upgrade defence preparedness. Further modernisation steps are expected as the government continues to focus on equipping the armed forces with reliable, modern systems to meet future security challenges.
