Belgrade, Serbia (UNA) :
Novak Djokovic has opened up about the emotional challenges he faced while rising through the ranks of men’s tennis during the peak rivalry between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. In a recent reflection, the Serbian star acknowledged that breaking into an era dominated by two globally adored champions was not easy.
Djokovic said that during the early stages of his career, the narrative in men’s tennis largely revolved around Federer and Nadal, leaving little space for another contender. He described moments when he felt like an outsider, both in terms of public perception and emotional acceptance, despite competing at the highest level.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion noted that he initially tried to adapt his personality to gain broader approval but eventually realised that authenticity was more important than fitting into expectations. Embracing his true self, he said, helped him grow both mentally and professionally.
Over time, Djokovic went on to establish himself as an integral part of the celebrated “Big Three,” rewriting record books and shaping one of the most competitive eras in tennis history. His reflections highlight the psychological side of elite sport, where success often comes with personal struggles beyond the court.
Tennis observers say Djokovic’s comments offer insight into the resilience required to succeed alongside legendary rivals and underline the human side of long-term sporting excellence.
