What Your Earwax Colour and Texture Could Tell You About Your Health

New Delhi India (UNA) :

Earwax might seem unimportant, but doctors say it can be a helpful indicator of ear and skin health. Earwax is the body’s natural way of protecting the ear canal by trapping dust, dirt and microbes. Its colour and texture can vary from person to person  and changes may hint at what’s happening inside your ears.

Normal earwax is usually light brown or yellowish and slightly sticky. This type helps keep the ear clean without blocking sound. If earwax is very dark, black, or crumbly, it could be old wax that has hardened. While not serious in itself, hardened wax can sometimes make hearing feel dull or clogged.

In some cases, wax that’s very light and dry could point to dry skin in the ear canal, especially in cooler or dry climates. A sudden increase in wax that’s very wet or smelly may also suggest irritation or infection. If you notice pain, discharge, itching, or hearing loss along with unusual earwax, it’s a good idea to consult a healthcare provider.

Health experts recommend avoiding cotton swabs deep in the ear, as they can push wax further in or irritate skin. Instead, gentle cleaning around the outer ear is usually sufficient. For persistent buildup, clinics can offer safe removal.

For everyday people, understanding what your earwax looks like can act like an early warning signal. Paying a bit of attention and acting on unusual changes can help maintain ear health and prevent discomfort before it affects daily life.
